Olive oil soap was one of Palestine's best-known manufactured goods, and this stereograph records the cutting room where finished slabs were divided into bars for sale. Soap was made in towns such as Nablus for generations, using local olive oil, and workers cut the cured soap by hand. The card was published by the Universal Photo Art Company in 1903, when stereoviews of the Holy Land sold well to American viewers who looked at them through hand-held stereoscopes. Its later owner, collector Marian S. Carson, kept it as a record of a trade that is now seldom seen.
