A stereograph of a 1 1/4 bolt cutting machine is an unusual subject for the period, since most cards of the early 1860s show scenery, buildings, or people. Its wet collodion negative and albumen print reflect the photographic methods of the time, when amateur photographers sometimes used stereo cards to record tools and mechanical devices. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two slightly offset images give the machine a sense of depth and solidity. The card was received in early January 1862, and the number 467 penciled on its front marks it as part of a numbered series.
