This stereoview shows Anderson Valley and Devils Peak as seen from Emigrant Mountain, one of the card's titled scenes from the Central Pacific Railroad's Sierra Nevada series. The Central Pacific was pushing its line over the Sierra in the mid-1860s, and photographers were sent along the route to document the difficult mountain country it crossed. Made as albumen prints mounted on paired cards, stereoviews like this were viewed through a hand-held viewer that gave the scene depth, and they were widely sold for home parlors. This card is numbered 192 and comes from the collection of Marian S. Carson.
