The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, is the subject of this 1926 stereograph, a paired photograph meant to be seen through a stereoscope so the mission chapel appears to stand in three dimensions. Stereo cards like this were a popular form of picture-making in the early twentieth century, sold as souvenirs and travel views of landmarks. The Alamo, a former Spanish mission founded in the 1700s, had become a symbol of Texas independence after the 1836 siege, and by the 1920s it drew steady crowds of visitors. The card comes from the collection of Marian S. Carson, and it is a useful record of how the site looked to tourists nearly a century ago.
