This view looks along the broad San Juan River in Nicaragua, where a fortress with lookouts and gunners stands watch over the water. The river runs from Lake Nicaragua to the Caribbean, and its strategic value drew fortifications and repeated fighting over the centuries. The stereoview dates to 1902, a period when the United States was weighing Nicaragua as a possible canal route, which kept the river and its defenses in the public eye. The card was copyrighted by photographer B.L. Singley and issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, a firm that sold stereo views of distant places to American audiences.
