This stereograph shows the Union breastworks on Culps Hill, the wooded height south of Gettysburg that Union troops of the XII Corps held through the battle's second and third days. On the evening of July 2, 1863, Confederate troops briefly seized part of these earthworks before counterattacks drove them out early on July 3. Taken five years after the fighting, the card records how the log-and-earth defenses still stood on the ground. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical images merge into a single three-dimensional scene.
