This stereograph is titled *Prospect Hill Cut* and gives the excavation's measurements as 150 feet deep and 74 feet wide, a useful detail for judging the scale of the work. It is numbered 156 and dated 1865. The subject headings link it to Atlanta, Georgia, where the 1864 campaign left dwellings and streets badly damaged, but the series note assigns it to Central Pacific Railroad scenes in the Sierra Nevada, and the record does not settle which is correct. Stereoviews like this were produced in large numbers in the 1860s and viewed through a stereoscope to create an impression of depth.
