Nevada Fall, which the card gives as roughly 700 feet high, is shown here from a footbridge in Yosemite Valley after a July snowstorm, a detail that sets it apart from the many views of the valley's waterfalls taken in clear weather. The stereograph was published in 1870 by William Isaac Marshall as No. 1208 in his "California - Views in the Yo-Semite Valley" series. Stereo cards like this one were sold in large numbers to parlors across the United States, letting viewers see Yosemite's cliffs and falls in three dimensions long before most had traveled west.
