The Galveston hurricane of September 1900 left much of the city's downtown under water, and this stereo card shows the aftermath of that storm, with merchants spreading damaged goods out to dry. Such scenes were common in the weeks after the disaster, when business owners tried to salvage stock from ruined storefronts. The card was issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, one of several firms that sold stereoviews of the event to a national audience eager for news of the storm. Its surviving copyright notation and publisher credit make it a useful record of how commercial photographers packaged a regional catastrophe for the parlor table.
