Debris piled against the stone arch railroad bridge over the Conemaugh River caught fire in the days after the flood of May 31, 1889, and this view shows the smoldering wreckage. The South Fork dam had failed upstream, releasing a wave that swept through Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and killed more than 2,000 people. The jam of houses, lumber and household goods burned for days, becoming one of the most striking images of the disaster. The view was issued by Filson & Son of Steubenville, Ohio, and its copyright is credited to William H. Rau, a photographer known for his flood pictures.
