The 1900 Galveston hurricane struck the Texas coast on September 8, 1900, and this stereoview captures one of its quieter aftermaths: survivors picking through the wreckage of their neighborhoods to figure out where their houses had stood. The card was published by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, a firm that sold stereographs to a public eager for images of distant events, and it was registered for copyright, which helped it reach a wide audience. Because the storm flattened much of the low-lying island city and killed thousands, scenes like this one became a grim record of how the disaster felt at street level.
