Perched on a ridge above Cusco, Sacsayhuamán is the fortress this card shows, and its huge stone blocks, fitted together without mortar, are what catch the eye first. The Inca built it in the decades before the Spanish arrived, and in 1536 Manco Inca's forces fought hard around its walls during the siege of the city. The card was issued by the American Stereoscopic Company in 1907, when stereoviews were a popular way for American households to see distant places in three dimensions.
