Inside Fort Sumter in 1865, this stereograph looks out past broken masonry toward Morris Island, where Union batteries had pressed the siege of Charleston for much of the war. The fort, built on a shoal at the mouth of Charleston Harbor, was reduced to rubble by sustained Union bombardment, and the parapets shown here reflect that punishment. Stereo cards like this one were sold in large numbers after the war, letting viewers see the ruined fortifications in three dimensions from the comfort of home.
