The stereograph shows a work camp near the Summit Tunnel on the Central Pacific Railroad, with Mount King rising in the distance. The tunnel was part of the railroad's push across the Sierra Nevada in the mid-1860s, a stretch of construction that relied on hand drilling, black powder and large crews of laborers. The card is numbered 116 in a series of Sierra Nevada scenes and came from the collection of Marian S. Carson. Its subject headings also list John C. Calhoun's tomb and St. Philip's Church in Charleston, which do not match the title, so researchers should check the cataloging against the image.
