Colfax, a railroad stop in the Sierra Nevada foothills of northern California, is the subject here, with the older mining settlement of Illinoistown visible in the distance. The view comes from a series of stereo cards documenting the Central Pacific Railroad as it pushed east through the mountains in the mid-1860s, when the line was building toward the summit. The record's subject headings instead point to Charleston, South Carolina, prisons and clubhouses from the Civil War, which do not match the scene. Researchers should treat the title and series information as the more reliable guide to this card.
