Massachusetts Street was the main thoroughfare of Lawrence, Kansas, a town founded in 1854 by antislavery settlers backed by the New England Emigrant Aid Company, which is why the street carries a Massachusetts name. By 1867, when this stereograph was made, Lawrence was still rebuilding after William Quantrill's raiders burned much of the town in August 1863. The card belongs to a series meant to show travelers the country along the rail lines, so the view reflects both the street's everyday life and the town's recovery.
