Titled "Poetry and prose," this stereo card is labeled as a view at Monument Point, at the north end of Salt Lake, though its subject headings place the tracks in Pleasant Valley, Nevada. Made in 1865, it belongs to a numbered series of Central Pacific Railroad scenes, taken while the company was building its line across the Great Basin. Stereographs like this were sold for viewing through a stereoscope, which gave viewers a sense of depth in the new railroad landscape.
