Red Cañon, shown here from a point one mile below Bee Hive Point, is a narrow gorge on the Green River where the canyon walls rise steeply above the water. The card is one of a series from the U.S. Topographical and Geological Survey of the Valley of the Colorado River of the West, led by John Wesley Powell, whose 1871 expedition charted these canyons in detail for the first time. Published by William I. Marshall, the stereo pair was meant to be viewed through a lens, giving armchair viewers back East a sense of depth and scale in landscapes most of them would never see.
