Few places in the Wheeler Survey's western work carried as much warm-spring history as Pagosa Springs, a hot spring in the San Juan country of southwestern Colorado. The Ute people had used these waters long before American surveyors arrived, and the survey's 1874 field season carried its teams through the region to map and record the terrain. The card's publisher, William I. Marshall, issued it as part of a series tied to the Pagosa Hot Springs Company, so it likely also served as a view of a resort that was still taking shape. As an albumen print on a stereo card, it was meant to be seen through a viewer, which gave the spring and its surroundings a sense of depth.
