This stereograph shows one of the rapids in Cataract Canyon, a stretch of the Colorado River in what is now southeastern Utah that was known for its turbulent water. It belongs to a series from the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Rocky Mountain Region, led by John Wesley Powell, which mapped and documented the river's canyons in the early 1870s. Viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images give the rushing water and sheer walls a sense of depth that a flat print could not, and the cards were sold to a public eager to see the remote Western landscape.
