The detail that sets this card apart is the airship itself: the German Graf Zeppelin hovering over the Giza necropolis, with the pyramids below it. Keystone View Company, a major American maker of stereoscopic cards, issued the view in 1931, when the Graf Zeppelin was touring the world on long-distance flights and drawing crowds wherever it landed or passed overhead. Pairing a rigid airship with monuments some four and a half thousand years old was a deliberate contrast of modern travel and ancient wonder, the kind of juxtaposition stereoviews were built to sell to armchair travelers.
