Few features at Mammoth Hot Springs drew more curiosity than the periodical hot lake, a basin whose water rose and drained on an irregular schedule. This card pairs that crater with a limestone formation whose ridges and edges resemble leaves. William Isaac Marshall published the view in 1876 as number 114 in a set of 122 stereographs documenting Yellowstone, at a time when photographers working alongside federal survey parties were bringing the park's springs and terraces to eastern audiences for the first time. Viewed through a stereoscope, the card gives the rim of the basin and the fine stone ridges a sense of depth that a flat print could not.
