The Gate of Lodore shows the rock walls where the Green River enters the Canyon of Lodore, a narrow gorge on the river's course through what is now northwestern Colorado. This stereograph is numbered 242 and belongs to a series of Green River views issued in the 1870s, tied to John Wesley Powell's surveys of the Colorado River valley. Stereo cards like this were sold to be viewed through a hand viewer, which gave parlor audiences a sense of depth in scenes most would never see in person. Its publisher, William Isaac Marshall, was active in distributing such western views.
