Within a set of Yosemite Valley views, this stereograph is titled "The Bridge," and its record also ties it to a U.S. topographical and geological survey series by J.W. Powell and A.H. Thompson, which is worth keeping in mind when reading its catalog entry. The card is an albumen print mounted on stereo card, and its two nearly identical images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused them into a single three-dimensional scene. Stereoviews like this were a popular parlor and travel item in the 1870s, and many were sold as souvenirs of distant or famous landscapes. Collector Marian S. Carson's name in the record shows how such cards passed through private collections before reaching institutional holdings.
