A Pennsylvania Railroad bridge spanning the Susquehanna River is the subject of this stereograph, and its title indicates the view was taken from the west. The card was issued by the Pennsylvania Photographic Society, an amateur group, and a number penciled on a mile-marker post in the left image marks it within the society's series. Rail crossings like this one mattered greatly in 1861, when the Pennsylvania Railroad carried freight and troops during the first months of the Civil War. The catalog also lists subject terms for Charleston and Fort Sumter, which do not match the bridge in the title, so the card itself is the better guide to what it shows.
