Inscription Rock, a sandstone bluff in western New Mexico also called El Morro, rises here as seen from its eastern side. Travelers carved names and messages into its face for centuries, including Spanish colonists on the route to the Zuni and Acoma pueblos. The most famous inscription records Juan de Oñate's visit in 1605. This stereograph comes from Lieut. George M. Wheeler's survey west of the 100th Meridian, a federal effort that documented the region's geology and landscape for the War Department. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical images give the bluff a sense of depth and solidity.
