A basket seller carrying his wares through Mexico City is the subject here, a figure who was a familiar part of street life in the capital in the early twentieth century. The picture was made in 1908 as a stereograph, a paired-image card meant to be viewed through a stereoscope so the scene appeared to have depth. Stereoviews like this were widely sold and collected in that period, offering armchair travelers glimpses of far-off places and everyday work. Street vendors such as this one, moving goods on foot to households across the city, were a common sight that tended to draw the eye of photographers recording local life.
