Yorktown, Virginia, is the particular place here, and the stereo card shows Confederate earthworks there in 1862, part of the defenses built along the Peninsula to slow Union forces advancing toward Richmond. That spring, Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac laid siege to Yorktown, and the Confederate line it faced relied on heavy guns set behind earth parapets. The card belongs to the War Photograph and Exhibition Company's series, issued as stereoviews so viewers could see the works in depth through a hand viewer. Its artillery subject reflects how much of the early war's fighting turned on fortified positions like this one.
