The plaza and its Roman Catholic church set this card apart: it shows Guadalupe, a small village in Colorado's San Luis Valley built around a central square. The image was made in 1874 during the Army's Geographical Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, led by Lieutenant George M. Wheeler, whose survey photographers documented the region's landscapes and settlements. Publisher William I. Marshall issued it as a stereo card, so the scene was meant to be seen in three dimensions through a viewer.
