The altar ruins at the old mission church at Zuni Pueblo in western New Mexico make this card stand out from the survey's more typical landscape views. A note in pencil on the back describes the scene as the interior of a Roman Catholic church at Zuni, since destroyed. Spanish missionaries worked among the Zuni people beginning in the 1600s, and the church's decline reflects the long and uneven contact between Pueblo communities and colonial Catholicism. The image belongs to the 1871 Geographical Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian expedition, led by Lieutenant George M. Wheeler, and was published by William I. Marshall.
