Few stereoviews show the Chilkoot route as directly as this one, which records the search for victims of the snowslide that struck the Dyea Trail on April 3, 1898. The avalanche buried a crowded line of prospectors climbing toward Chilkoot Pass during the Klondike gold rush, killing dozens and marking one of the worst disasters of that rush. Stereo cards like this were sold to a public eager for images of the far north, so the scene reached viewers far from Alaska as a stark record of what the journey could cost.
