The Dyea Trail ran from the coastal town of Dyea, Alaska, up the Chilkoot route toward the Klondike goldfields in the Yukon. In 1898, at the height of the gold rush, thousands of prospectors struggled up this path, hauling heavy loads of food and gear over steep, muddy ground toward the pass. Canadian authorities required each man to carry roughly a ton of supplies across the border, which made the trail a grueling test of endurance. This stereoview, issued by Underwood & Underwood, was made for parlor viewers and offers a sense of the crowded, exhausting routes that drew so many to the North.
