Few war views from 1897 place fighting so close to religious houses, and this stereograph shows skirmishing in northern Greece, where monasteries were often built on high, defensible ground. The Greco-Turkish War of that year was brief, lasting only about a month in spring, and its fighting centered on the border regions of Thessaly and Epirus. Stereo cards like this one were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene depth and made distant combat feel immediate to viewers at home. The copyright entry names John Rogers, a sculptor, as claimant, a reminder that such cards often passed through hands other than their makers.
