Gene Sarazen, the golf champion known for his powerful swing, is caught here at the top of his backswing with a wooden-headed club, the moment just before the downswing that golf instructors still study. The image is a stereograph, a card printed with two nearly identical photographs that, viewed through a stereoscope, merged into a single three-dimensional scene. Underwood & Underwood, a firm famous for producing these cards in huge numbers, registered the picture with the U.S. Copyright Office, and its 1930 date places it during the height of Sarazen's career as a professional golfer.
