Harry Vardon, the Jersey-born golfer who won the Open Championship six times, is shown here holding the finish of his swing, a pose that made his technique famous among amateurs and professionals alike. The image was issued as a stereograph in 1913, when Underwood & Underwood produced cards like this one by the thousands for home viewers with stereoscopes. Vardon's grip, with its overlapping hold on the club, became known as the Vardon grip and is still taught today. The stereo format gives the figure a sense of depth that a flat photograph of the period could not match.
