The title, *The Song of India*, suggests a staged, romanticized scene rather than a documentary view, a common approach in commercial stereographs of the late 1920s. Cards like this were viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset photographs into a single three-dimensional image and made posed scenes popular as parlor entertainment. The card carries a copyright notice from Exhibit Supply Co., with Underwood & Underwood listed as the copyright claimant. That firm had been one of the largest stereoview publishers in the early twentieth century, so the card reflects the popular taste of its era more than a record of any particular place.
