Bendigo, in the Victorian goldfields of central Victoria, Australia, was one of the great gold-rush towns of the 1850s, and this 1921 stereograph records mining there long after the first rush had passed. The subject is hydraulic mining, a method that used high-pressure jets of water to wash gold-bearing earth out of hillsides and into sluices for separation. Issued by Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for its travel stereoviews sold to American households, the card was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope and to show distant places in three dimensions. Its subject, a working landscape of gold extraction, offers a window onto how the old goldfields were still being worked in the early twentieth century.
