Three Winnebago men sit side by side, full length and facing the camera, in this 1868 stereograph by W.H. Illingworth, numbered 13 in its series. The record suggests C.L. Hamilton may have made the exposure, and its subject tags on clothing and dress reflect how such cards presented Native sitters to 1860s viewers. Seen through a stereoscope, the two slightly offset images merged into a single three-dimensional scene, a popular parlor entertainment of the period. The Winnebago, now known as the Ho-Chunk, were moved several times during the 1860s, so these portraits capture people whose lives were being upended by federal removal policy.
