The stereograph shows the Old Slave Market in St. Augustine, a small coquina-stone building that visitors in the 1880s treated as a relic of the town's Spanish past. St. Augustine was then reinventing itself as a winter resort, and photographers like George Barker, whose "Gems of American Scenery" series this card belongs to, sold views of such landmarks to a public eager for travel images. The card's title keeps the period label "old slave market," which reflects how the building was understood at the time, and it is worth reading that label with the history of enslavement in colonial and territorial Florida in mind.
