Aibonita Heights, seen from the Military Road, shows a mountain town in central Puerto Rico and the rugged highland route that climbed past it. The Military Road, built under Spanish colonial rule in the nineteenth century, was an important link across the island's interior between its northern and southern coasts. The card dates to 1900, two years after the United States took control of the island following the Spanish-American War, and was made by R.Y. Young, who registered it for copyright. Its paired images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth, and the riders on horseback in the scene reflect how much travel in these hills still depended on animals.
