Walpi, one of the ancient Hopi villages on First Mesa in northeastern Arizona, drew many photographers around 1900. In this 1903 stereograph, a Hopi man sits at his loom and works on a blanket, a task traditionally carried out by men in Hopi communities. Hopi weaving in cotton and wool long predates sustained contact with Europeans, and by the early 1900s the craft was changing as commercial yarns and trade blankets reached the mesas. Stereo cards like this one were viewed through a hand viewer to create a sense of depth, bringing scenes of distant places into American homes.
