Posed before a log fence, with others seated under a canopied shelter behind them, this 1862 stereograph shows a group wearing blankets. The subjects are only tentatively identified as possibly Winnebago (today's Ho-Chunk), so that label should be read as the archive's uncertain attribution. Stereocards like this were sold in sets and viewed through a stereoscope, which gave two nearly identical photographs a convincing sense of depth. The back of the card names C.L. Hamilton and a later owner, Marian S. Carson, whose notes help trace how the card passed from hand to hand.
