The Royal Exchange in the City of London, pictured here on a stereoscopic card from about 1855, was the city's great commercial hall, where merchants gathered to trade and do business for centuries. The building that stood here in the 1850s was the second of its name; the first had been destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, and the replacement, designed by Edward Jerman, opened in 1669. Stereoviews like this one, issued in the London Stereoscopic Company's series of London scenes, let Victorian viewers see the city's landmarks in apparent three dimensions through a hand viewer. The card's caption names the Royal Exchange among the series' views, making it a useful record of the financial heart of Victorian London.
