A dead 14-year-old Confederate soldier lies outside a bomb-proof shelter in the trenches of Fort Mahone in this 1865 stereograph. The fort, part of the Confederate defenses around Petersburg, Virginia, fell to Union forces in early April 1865, and photographers moved in soon after to document the captured works. The card was published by E. & H.T. Anthony and the War Photograph and Exhibition Company. Its paired images gave viewers a three-dimensional look at the scene, a format that brought the grim aftermath of the fighting into homes across the North.
