Rusting dredges sitting idle at Greytown, the Caribbean port also known as San Juan del Norte, show what became of an ambitious canal scheme. This stereograph, made by B.L. Singley and issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, shows the equipment left to decay after work on the harbor stalled. By 1903, when the view was published, Washington had turned its attention to a Panama route, and the Nicaraguan project that had drawn private and government interest for decades was effectively shelved. The card's title, calling the machines "sad monuments," reflects how visibly the abandoned effort had marked the waterfront.
