Among the Central Pacific views in this series, this card of the Capitol granite quarry at Rocklin, 22 miles from Sacramento, stands out for its industrial subject. Rocklin lay along the railroad line under construction in the mid-1860s, and its granite went toward building the state capitol in Sacramento, tying the railroad's progress to the making of California's seat of government. Issued as part of a set of Sierra Nevada scenes, the card was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the rough quarry faces a sense of depth. The catalog also lists Cape Horn cliffs among its subjects, a reminder that the series mixed quarry sites with the mountain landscape the railroad crossed.
