The Leaning Tower of Pisa, shown here as a stereoview card from 1898, is paired in its record with the cathedral, the Duomo, which stands beside it in the old square. Stereo cards like this were sold in sets and viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, so the two slightly offset images fused into a single three-dimensional scene. By the late 1890s the tower's tilt, which had begun during construction in the twelfth century, was already a famous attraction for travelers, and American publishers issued many views of it. The card was produced by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company and registered for copyright, a common step for commercial views of the period.
