Hunters trudging back to camp to warm themselves after a cold day on the water is the scene this stereograph captures, and the title, "Returning to camp to thaw out," spells out the mood plainly. Stereocards like this one were sold in large numbers in the early 1900s, when viewing them through a parlor stereoscope gave armchair audiences a sense of depth and presence. Duck shooting was a popular winter pastime, and images of it reflected a long tradition of sportsmen's outings in the American outdoors. Hunting scenes like this one also offer a useful look at the gear and camp life of the period.
