This ambrotype, dated about 1854, shows Niagara Falls, the cataract that spans the border between New York and Ontario. Ambrotypes were a quicker and cheaper alternative to daguerreotypes, built on a glass plate with a dark backing that made the image look positive. By the mid-1850s the falls had become one of the most popular subjects for early photographers and tourists in the United States. The picture was later reproduced in *Eyes of the Nation* and included in the Library of Congress's *American Treasures* exhibition in 2004 and 2005.
