This color lithograph is the cover of a viewbook, one of the small illustrated souvenir booklets that visitors bought to take home from Niagara Falls. Thomas Tugby issued this guide from Niagara Falls, New York, around 1885, when the cataract drew steady crowds by rail and steamer and local publishers competed for the tourist trade. Color lithography made elaborate covers affordable, and the piece was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which protected the design against copying. It offers a useful glimpse of how the falls were packaged and sold to visitors of the period.
